racism, also called racialism , any action, practice, or belief that reflects the racial worldview—the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called “races,” that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural behavioral features, and that some races are innately superior to others.
Aryan (in Aryan (people)) In Europe the notion of white racial superiority emerged in the 1850s, propagated most assiduously by the comte de Gobineau and later by his disciple Houston Stewart Chamberlain, who first used the term “Aryan” for the white race. Members of this so-called race spoke Indo-European languages, were credited with all the progress that benefited humanity, and were purported to be…
Superiority of the Aryans Vol I, chapter 16, the final chapter of that volume, carries the long superscript “Récapitulation; caractères respectifs des trois grandes races; effects sociaux des mélanges; supérorité du type blanc et, dans ce type, de la famille ariane”, or, in English, “Recapitulation; respective characters of the three great races; social effects of [racial] mixtures; superiority of the white type and, within that type, of the Aryan family”. Gobineau claims that there have been no more than ten great civilizations, and that they have all been started by the white race. These civilizations are: The Indian civilization – built around a branch of the Aryans. The Egyptian civilization – founded by an Aryan colony from India. The Assyrians – to which are attached other civilizations such as the Jewish and the Phoenician. According to Gobineau, these are Hamites and Semites. Gobineau places the Iranian civilizations here, but claims that they are Aryans. The Greeks – originally Aryans, but with Semitic elements. The Chinese civilization – like the Egyptian founded by an Aryan colony from India. The old civilization of the Italian Peninsula – became a mosaic of Celts, Iberians, Aryans, and Semites. The Germanic races transformed in the 5th century the western spirit – they were Aryans. The Alleghanian civilizations in America. The Mexican civilizations in America. The Peruvian civilization in America. In Vol VI, chapter 7, “Les indigènes américans” (“The native Americans”), Gobineau discusses the racial status of the native Americans and ends up suggesting that at least the royal families of the three American civilization groups mentioned above (8.-10.) were white, even Aryans of Scandinavian origin.
Comment: When I went to Christchurch rudolf steiner for the first time, I remember commenting to my wife, that the atmosphere was really strange in the school. One of my observations was, that it felt segregated. There were very few people of colour. Everything was german/eurocentric/and there was a veil of secrecy and superiority. That was on my very first visit. I knew nothing, but felt everything.
Rudolf Steiner, February 18, 1923:
“The Mystery of Golgotha stands at the center of the whole human evolution on Earth. The fact that the Mystery of Golgotha entered history at a moment when the Greeks strove to set forth the divine in man from an external aspect, from the aspect of the Earth, as it were, should not be considered as a historical coincidence. We might say, and this is more than a poetical image: The Greeks had to set forth the divine in man artistically, out of the ingredients of the Earth, and the cosmos sent down to the Earth the God who entered man, as a cosmic answer to the wonderful question sent out into the world’s spaces, as it were, by the Greeks. In the historical development we may sense, as it were, that with their humanly portrayed gods the Greeks addressed the following question to the universe: Can Man become a God? And the universe replied: God can become Man. This reply was given through the event of the Mystery of Golgotha.”
Truth – Waldorf Watch. Quite a complete turn around for an ex steinie. I was pleased to read that someone else had got out.
“Here’s another example of a Waldorf teacher twisting a Bible story — Abraham and the ram — to find Anthroposophical tenets in it: “[T]he earth comes under the influence of a particular sign of the Zodiac every 2160 years. This period marks the duration of a cultural epoch … The new age of Aries, the ram, began in 747 B.C. … Abraham saw the ram, i.e. he looked forward to the new age; but the ram’s horns were caught in a thicket. Horns are symbols for two centers in the head connected with clairvoyance. When the ram is sacrificed, it means that in the new era men will no longer have the faculty of clairvoyance.” — Roy Wilkisnon, COMMENTARY ON THE OLD TESTAMENT STORIES (Rudolf Steiner College Press, 2001), p. 35. • Once again, we see astrology being imposed on the Bible: the zodiac, the age of Aries, implicitly the sign of the ram… • Steiner claimed that ancient people had natural clairvoyance: This is what allowed them to create “true” myths, fairy tales, and Old Testament stories. But later people evolved to a condition in which most clairvoyant powers have been lost. Fortunately, however, Steiner himself employed “exact clairvoyance” to learn deep spiritual truths, such as the real meaning of the stories in the Bible. • In Waldorf belief, a “cultural epoch” is a period lasting about 2,1600 years — the length of time when a particular sign of the zodiac has its greatest influence. There are also “great epochs” that are much longer. As Wilkinson indicates, the stages of our evolution are closely connected to the astrological powers of the stars. Or so Anthroposophists believe. The sort of “logic” found in Anthroposophy is reflected here. The Bible includes a story about a ram. There’s an astrological sign called the ram. Therefore, the Bible story must be about our evolution through astrologically influenced stages. (For more about the sort of “thinking” encouraged in Waldorf schools, see “Thinking Cap”. For the use of clairvoyance by Waldorf faculty, see “The Waldorf Teacher’s Consciousness”.) [For information about the Waldorf worldview, see The Brief Waldorf / Steiner Encyclopedia. What is the curriculum at a Waldorf school like? (this from waldorf answers, my thoughts are in red)
The Waldorf curriculum is designed to be responsive to the various phases of a child’s development. (my experience is that they, the Christchurch steiner school, try to fit the children into their 7 year cycles regardless of where they’re actually at) The relationship between student and teacher is, likewise, recognized to be both crucial and changing throughout the course of childhood and early adolescence. (my step-daughter’s teacher is not qualified to teach at Primary Grade 1, he studied bio-dynamic farming and anthroposophy. That does not make him a teacher, he is baby sitting and doesn’t know what to do).
The main subjects, such as history, language arts, science and mathematics are, as mentioned, taught in main lesson blocks of two to three hours per day, with each block lasting from three to five weeks. (2 or 3 hour blocks is not a useful block of time for a Grade one student. It is well known that they do not have the concentration span for that. So far it has failed my 3 step-children).
The total Waldorf curriculum has been likened to an ascending spiral: subjects are revisited several times, but each new exposure affords greater depth and new insights into the subject at hand. (this is a common way to teach in state schools. The difference is that state schools pre-test children so the don’t go over things the children already know which is boring, a common complaint. Then state schools post test to find out what the child has learned).
A typical Lower School curriculum would likely look something like the following:
Primary Grades 1 – 3
Pictorial introduction to the alphabet, writing, reading, spelling, poetry and drama.
Folk and fairy tales, fables, legends, Old Testament stories. (All eurocentric accept a very small nod towards Aotearoa-NZ’s own stories, myths, and legends. No depth unless it’s aryan gods and legends).
Numbers, basic mathematical processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Nature stories, house building and gardening.
